How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the lost audi key G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. 3. Fuel Pump
